A huge 16 ½ foot crocodile weighing up to 1000 kilos was captured by residents of Kandegewaththa at Hekiththa, in Hendala around 3:00 am yesterday.

Nihal Jayasekera and his brother were among those who caught the crocodile with the help of a noose while it was swimming in the Kallualla canal.

Just a guess on where Crocodile was Captured

Eyewitnesses said that after a sustained struggle the crocodile was bound by ropes and cables.

Wildlife Department range officer Amil Jayawardene said the crocodile was 16 and half feet long and weighed between 800 and 1000 kilos.

With the assistance of the residents and the police the male crocodile was transported to the head office of the Wild life department in Malabe.

Mr. Jayawardene said it would be transferred to the Udewallawe sanctuary during the course of the day and that relocation of the animal was the best thing to do although the marshland around Colombo was its natural habitat of the species.

Residents said the animal was responsible for the disappearance of household pets and livestock in the area and had been spotted in moving the vicinity a few times.
